The three hour long play, which has been around for 21 years now, is an absolute classic and a must-see for every culture lover and history buff.

The play has been a constant in the lives of the devotees and followers of Maharaj. The awe-inspiring and captivating story of his sacrifices, courage, and strength has stood the test of time and is still very relevant to this day. The play has been a source of inspiration to many of the youth and youngster, especially during these times when the nation is divided due to political differences and other factors.

In an attempt to connect with the younger generation, the organisers of the play decided to launch it in English and bring it to a wider audience. The play has been an integral part of Pune Festival for the past two decades and has received overwhelming response from both Indians and foreigners alike. The event is also an opportunity for the Pune city to showcase its cultural richness and diversity.

The production team has made sure Raja play to bring all the elements of a 17th-century play to life, from the costumes to the music. The audience will be able to witness a spectacular firework display as well as the recreation of several 17th-century scenes, including Afzal Khan’s killing and Shivaji Maharaj’s coronation ceremony. The play will also include the use of animals and 250 actors.

Rabindranath Tagore wrote the play ‘Raja’ (The King of Dark Chambers) in 1910, and it was one of his most favourite works. During this period, Tagore was going through a crisis in his personal, artistic and public life as he was struggling to overcome the tragedy of loss and the despair resulting from bereavement. This was also when he started experimenting with different forms of drama as a means to express his newfound ideas and perspectives. Eventually, the play became the vehicle for his new philosophies and ideals, which later on found its way to the book of philosophy called ‘Arupratan’.
